A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to address the visible signs of aging in the lower face and neck. With time, skin loses elasticity, facial fat shifts downward, and underlying muscles weaken—resulting in sagging cheeks, jowling along the jawline, deepening nasolabial folds, and vertical neck bands. A facelift restores a more youthful, refined facial contour by tightening underlying tissues, repositioning facial fat, and removing excess skin.
Ideal candidates for a facelift are individuals experiencing age-related changes such as laxity in the lower face and neck, volume loss in the midface, or skin wrinkling. Genetics, weight fluctuations, and sun exposure can all accelerate these changes. Patients should be in good health and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of surgery.
Facelift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are carefully placed around the ears and along the hairline to ensure scars are well-concealed. Through these discreet openings, underlying muscle layers (SMAS) are lifted and repositioned, and facial fat may be sculpted or redistributed to restore youthful volume. Often, a neck lift is performed at the same time to address platysmal banding and excess skin or fat in the neck and under the chin. The skin is then gently redraped, and any excess is removed before suturing the incisions.
Recovery involves some swelling, bruising, and tightness in the face and neck, which improve gradually over the first few weeks. Patients are typically back to social activities within 2–3 weeks. While initial improvements are noticeable early on, final results continue to refine as healing progresses over several months.
The benefits of a facelift can be transformative—resulting in a smoother jawline, lifted cheeks, softened wrinkles, and a rejuvenated, natural-looking appearance. Many patients report increased confidence and a renewed sense of self. As with any surgical procedure, a facelift carries risks and potential complications, which will be thoroughly discussed during your consultation.
