A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts, restoring a more youthful, lifted contour. Over time, factors such as aging, gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations can cause the breasts to lose firmness and settle into a lower position. A breast lift addresses these changes by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to improve shape, support, and symmetry.
Ideal candidates for a breast lift are women who are unhappy with the position or shape of their breasts, especially if the nipples point downward or fall below the breast crease. This procedure is often sought by women who have completed childbearing, are at a stable weight, and desire a natural, rejuvenated appearance. A breast lift can be performed on its own or in combination with breast augmentation if added volume is also desired.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and involves carefully planned incisions that allow the surgeon to reshape the breast mound and reposition the nipple-areola complex. Common incision techniques include:
The specific approach depends on the degree of lift needed and your individual anatomy. Once excess skin is removed and tissues are reshaped, the breasts are lifted to a higher position and incisions are meticulously closed to optimize healing.
Recovery involves mild to moderate swelling, bruising, and temporary soreness. Patients are advised to wear a supportive surgical bra and limit physical activity, especially heavy lifting, for several weeks. Initial improvements are visible soon after surgery, but final results will continue to refine as swelling resolves over the next few months.
A breast lift can dramatically enhance breast shape, position, and overall proportion—leading to improved confidence and comfort in clothing, swimwear, and daily life. As with any surgical procedure, potential risks and complications will be thoroughly reviewed during your consultation to ensure you're fully informed and supported in your decision.
